Si trabaja en un astillero profesional o gestiona un varadero de cierto volumen, la respuesta es directa: el acero galvanizado es el material dominante en los caballetes para barcos de uso profesional en España y en la mayor parte de Europa. La razón no es el precio —el aluminio puede costar más— sino la capacidad de carga estructural, la disponibilidad de documentación técnica y la facilidad de mantenimiento a largo plazo.

El acero estructural de grado S355, tratado con galvanizado en caliente o con pintura en polvo epoxi, ofrece resistencia a la deformación bajo cargas elevadas que el aluminio estándar no puede igualar sin un sobredimensionado significativo del perfil. Para embarcaciones de eslora media (9-14 m) y especialmente para veleros con quilla profunda, la rigidez del acero aporta una seguridad en el apoyo que resulta difícil de replicar con aluminio convencional.

Caballetes de acero: estructura, tratamientos y capacidad

El acero estructural S355 es el grado de referencia en la fabricación de caballetes profesionales para varaderos. Su límite elástico mínimo de 355 MPa proporciona una base mecánica sólida para el dimensionado de perfiles, y su comportamiento bajo cargas estáticas prolongadas —como las que se producen durante un invernaje de varios meses— es muy predecible si el diseño parte de cálculos correctos.

Tratamientos de superficie disponibles

El tratamiento superficial determina en gran medida la vida útil real del caballete en entorno marino:

- Galvanizado en caliente (HDG): inmersión en zinc fundido a 450 °C. Produce una capa de aleación zinc-acero de 45-85 µm que protege incluso en zonas de corte o soldadura posterior (el zinc actúa como ánodo sacrificial en pequeñas áreas expuestas). Es el tratamiento más extendido en astilleros profesionales españoles. - Pintura en polvo epoxi: acabado estético superior, colores corporativos posibles, buena resistencia química. Requiere un imprimado galvánico o fosfatado previo para entornos costeros exigentes. - Combinación HDG + polvo: la opción premium; el galvanizado garantiza la base anticorrosión y el polvo aporta acabado y resistencia mecánica superficial.

Capacidad de carga

Para embarcaciones de recreo estándar (hasta 15 t), los modelos de la gama media son suficientes; para superyates, catamaranes grandes o embarcaciones de trabajo, se requieren diseños específicos con cálculo estructural documentado.

Caballetes de aluminio: aleaciones, ventajas y limitaciones

Los caballetes de aluminio para embarcaciones se fabrican habitualmente en aleaciones de la serie 6000 (6061-T6 o 6082-T6), que combinan buena resistencia mecánica con excelente resistencia a la corrosión en ambientes marinos. La aleación 6082-T6, habitual en Europa, tiene un límite elástico de unos 260 MPa —inferior al S355 del acero— pero con una densidad aproximadamente tres veces menor.

Ventajas reales del aluminio

El argumento más sólido a favor del aluminio es el peso propio del soporte. Un caballete de aluminio para embarcaciones de hasta 5 t puede pesar un 60-65 % menos que su equivalente en acero. En contextos donde el personal mueve los soportes manualmente con frecuencia —varaderos de temporada, escuelas náuticas, arrendadores de embarcaciones deportivas— esta diferencia reduce la fatiga y el riesgo de lesiones.

Otra ventaja es la resistencia a la corrosión sin mantenimiento activo: el aluminio forma espontáneamente una capa de alúmina (Al2O3) que actúa como barrera pasiva. En costas mediterráneas con alta salinidad ambiental, esta propiedad reduce los ciclos de mantenimiento comparado con un acero que ha sufrido daños en el galvanizado.

Limitaciones a tener en cuenta

La capacidad de carga por unidad de sección es inferior. Para igualar la rigidez de un perfil de acero, el perfil de aluminio debe ser más grande, lo que reduce —aunque no elimina— la ventaja de peso. En embarcaciones de más de 15 t, el diseño de un caballete de aluminio competitivo en precio con uno de acero equivalente se vuelve complejo.

Otro punto a valorar es la corrosión galvánica: si el caballete de aluminio entra en contacto directo con piezas de acero sin recubrimiento (tornillería, subestructuras) en presencia de agua salada, puede producirse corrosión acelerada en las zonas de contacto. Un diseño correcto prevé el aislamiento o el uso de tornillería de acero inoxidable o titanio.

Finalmente, la disponibilidad de documentación CE en caballetes de aluminio es variable según el fabricante; conviene solicitarla expresamente antes de la compra.

Entornos costeros en España: costa Mediterránea y Atlántico

La elección de material no es la misma en todos los puntos del litoral español. Las condiciones ambientales difieren significativamente entre la costa mediterránea, el Atlántico norte y el Cantábrico, y estas diferencias afectan directamente a la vida útil de los soportes para barcos.

Costa Mediterránea

De Cataluña a Murcia y las Islas Baleares, la salinidad del agua es elevada (37-39 g/l) y la humedad relativa media es moderada (55-70 %). El viento de componente marina transporta aerosoles salinos que se depositan sobre las superficies metálicas. En este entorno, un galvanizado en caliente de buena calidad se comporta muy bien; los astilleros de la Costa Brava, la Costa del Sol o Ibiza que llevan décadas usando caballetes de acero galvanizado son el mejor testimonio. El mantenimiento recomendado es una inspección visual anual y el retoque con spray de zinc epoxi en zonas donde el recubrimiento haya sufrido impactos o rozaduras.

Costa Atlántica y Cantábrico

Desde el golfo de Cádiz hasta los puertos del País Vasco y Galicia, la situación es diferente. La humedad es mayor (70-85 % de media), las precipitaciones más frecuentes y la temperatura más baja en invierno. En estas condiciones, el ciclo de humectación-secado que acelera la corrosión se produce con más frecuencia. Aquí el galvanizado en caliente sigue siendo la opción robusta, pero la combinación HDG + pintura en polvo tiene más valor porque la capa orgánica reduce la superficie expuesta al electrolito.

El aluminio en estas costas tiene un comportamiento excelente en cuanto a corrosión, pero los astilleros del norte suelen manejar embarcaciones de mayor eslora (traineras, embarcaciones de pesca costera, veleros oceánicos) con cargas que con frecuencia superan la capacidad óptima de los diseños estándar de aluminio.

Recomendación práctica: independientemente del litoral, la decisión final debe basarse en el tipo de flota que atiende el varadero. Reparabilidad y vida económica

Un caballete de acero con un golpe o una zona de corrosión localizada puede repararse en el propio taller del astillero: soldadura, limpieza mecánica y retoque de zinc. Especificación de material

Tratamiento superficial

En acero: ¿galvanizado en caliente (HDG) según EN ISO 1461? ¿Cuál es el espesor mínimo garantizado de la capa de zinc? ¿Se ofrece combinación con pintura en polvo? En aluminio: ¿perfil extruido o chapa doblada? ¿Hay anodizado o simplemente el acabado natural de la aleación?

Certificado de carga

Pida el valor de carga nominal por soporte con el coeficiente de seguridad aplicado. Un proveedor serio debe poder entregar una ficha técnica con la carga admisible, el método de cálculo (normativa aplicada) y el factor de seguridad. Desconfíe de proveedores que solo indican una carga máxima sin especificar condiciones.

Documentación CE

Cuando el astillero exige documentación CE, solicite la declaración de conformidad, la norma armonizada aplicable y el expediente técnico. No todos los fabricantes de caballetes disponen de documentación CE completa; conviene verificarlo antes de la compra, no después.

Referencias y vida útil en entorno marino

Pida referencias de astilleros o varaderos en la misma franja costera que el suyo. Un soporte que lleva 10 años en un varadero del Mediterráneo o del Cantábrico es el mejor argumento de venta posible.

¿Los caballetes de aluminio disponen de documentación CE?

Depende del fabricante. No existe una obligación universal de documentación CE específica para caballetes de varadero en toda la UE; la exigencia varía según el uso, el país y los requisitos de la aseguradora. Algunos fabricantes de aluminio sí ofrecen documentación CE completa; otros no. Cuando se exige documentación CE, conviene solicitarla expresamente al proveedor antes de la compra y verificar con el astillero y la aseguradora qué documentación es necesaria en su caso concreto.

¿Cuánto dura el galvanizado en caliente en un entorno marino?

Un galvanizado en caliente de calidad según EN ISO 1461 —con una capa de zinc de 85 µm o más en piezas gruesas— puede durar entre 20 y 40 años en ambiente de corrosividad C3 (ambiente marino moderado) y entre 10 y 20 años en C4-C5 (ambiente marino severo, niebla salina frecuente). En la práctica, los caballetes de un varadero suelen tener una vida útil real de 15-25 años con una inspección anual y retoques puntuales en zonas dañadas. El mayor factor de degradación no es la inmersión sino el ciclo repetido de humectación, deposición de sal y secado.

¿Puedo mezclar caballetes de acero y de aluminio en el mismo varadero?

Sí, es posible operativamente, pero conviene hacerlo con criterio. No hay problema en tener una flota de acero para embarcaciones pesadas y otra de aluminio para embarcaciones ligeras. Lo que no se recomienda es usar simultáneamente caballetes de acero sin recubrimiento y de aluminio en contacto directo (por ejemplo, apilados húmedos o con tornillería de acero sin tratar), ya que puede producirse corrosión galvánica acelerada en los puntos de contacto. Si se usan juntos, aíslelos con calzos de polietileno o UHMW y utilice tornillería de acero inoxidable A4.

¿Qué material es mejor para veleros con quilla profunda?

Para veleros con quilla profunda —especialmente quillas de lastre en plomo o acero con bulbo— la carga puntual sobre el soporte de quilla puede ser muy elevada en relación con el peso total. En estos casos, el acero S355 con soporte de quilla específico es la opción más segura, ya que permite diseños de alta rigidez con sección reducida. Los caballetes laterales de un velero de 10-15 t sobre una quilla fin pueden necesitar reabsorber momentos de vuelco significativos; la rigidez del acero ofrece mayor margen de seguridad en esta configuración. ¿El aluminio necesita mantenimiento en entorno marino?

Menos que el acero sin recubrimiento, pero no equivale a mantenimiento nulo. La capa de alúmina que protege el aluminio es estable, pero en presencia de cloruros concentrados (agua de mar directa, depósitos de sal seca) puede degradarse localmente, especialmente en aleaciones de la serie 6000 con precipitados de Mg2Si. Se recomienda limpiar los caballetes con agua dulce al final de cada temporada, inspeccionar las uniones y la tornillería (que suele ser el punto débil), y retirar cualquier depósito de barro o conchas que pueda retener humedad. El mantenimiento es más sencillo que el del acero, pero no es inexistente.

¿Qué significa S355 y por qué es importante para los caballetes?

S355 es la designación europea (EN 10025-2) de un acero estructural con límite elástico mínimo de 355 MPa. El número indica justamente ese límite: la tensión a partir de la cual el acero empieza a deformarse de forma permanente. Para los caballetes, esto significa que un perfil de S355 puede soportar un 50 % más de carga que el mismo perfil en S235 (acero de construcción básico) antes de comenzar a ceder. En la práctica, el uso de S355 permite diseños más esbeltos y ligeros para una capacidad de carga dada, o mayor margen de seguridad con el mismo perfil. ¿El precio del aluminio se justifica en un varadero de gran volumen?

En general, no para la totalidad de la flota. En compras de 20-50 caballetes para un varadero de tamaño medio, la diferencia de precio entre acero galvanizado y aluminio de capacidad equivalente puede suponer un sobrecoste de entre el 20 y el 40 %. Este sobrecoste solo se justifica si el ahorro en mantenimiento, la reducción de lesiones por manejo o la capacidad de operar en zonas donde el peso del soporte es un limitante real son cuantificables y significativos en el contexto específico del varadero. La estrategia más común en astilleros profesionales españoles es un parque principal de caballetes de acero galvanizado complementado con un número reducido de caballetes de aluminio para embarcaciones ligeras o para usos específicos.

General Terms and Conditions of Sale

Prices and Orders: All listed prices exclude value-added tax and are subject to change without prior notice. The current price list supersedes and nullifies any previous price lists. Only written orders are considered legally binding, with written confirmation including postal and email confirmations. Any other form of an order requires explicit written confirmation from Spinea Navis.

Payment: Payment is required following the agreed terms. If a delay occurs, whether partial or full, Spinea Navis reserves the right to suspend further deliveries and demand full payment, including any applicable interest. Spinea Navis retains ownership of the delivered goods until payment is completed in full.

Delivery Terms and Penalties: Delivery terms are Ex-Works from the Spinea Navis factory, located at 10000 Zagreb, Croatia. The buyer assumes all risks and responsibilities associated with the transportation of goods. Upon notification, the buyer is required to accept the prepared order within 10 days. Failure to do so may result in Spinea Navis imposing a daily penalty. For a more detailed interpretation of the Ex-Works clause, please refer to the International Chamber of Commerce Incoterms 2010 provisions.

Shipping and Packaging: All machines undergo inspection, testing, and proper packaging before shipment. Certain machines may be delivered partially disassembled for storage or transportation purposes. In these instances, the buyer is responsible for covering the costs associated with assembly or packaging.

Warranty: Spinea Navis provides a twenty-four-month warranty on new goods of its manufacture, starting from the delivery date. The warranty does not cover:

  • Normal wear and tear of parts (subject to rapid and consistent wear), including filters, flails, bearings, wear stripes, belts, cables, hoses, transmission parts, etc.

During these twelve months, Spinea Navis d.o.o commits to replacing, free of charge, parts verified as defective by their technical and service department. Other costs, such as labour, transport, and packaging, remain the buyer’s responsibility.

Warranty Invalidation: The warranty is invalidated by:

  • Incorrect or improper use of the machine
  • Unauthorized modifications to the machine
  • User negligence or inexperience (e.g., not using original Spinea Navis  parts)
  • Insufficient service inspections and improper use under difficult conditions or inconsistent instructions due to unauthorized interventions
  • Using the machine in a manner not compliant with the instructions for use and maintenance
  • Using non-original spare parts
  • Using unspecified, non-prescribed lubricants
  • Failing to perform scheduled maintenance 
  • Repairs not conducted by an authorized workshop or interventions without prior permission from Spinea Navis 
  • Unauthorized electrical and/or mechanical changes
  • Damages due to loss of earnings, personal property, exchanges, or rents

The seller is not liable for any direct and/or indirect loss or damage, particularly concerning production loss due to machine failure resulting from improper use, unintended use, failure to perform inspections, and non-compliance with accident prevention laws. Such grounds are sufficient for the annulment and invalidation of any applicable warranty. During the machine’s inactivity period, the customer cannot claim compensation and/or reimbursement of costs and/or direct and/or indirect damage resulting from defects due to the aforementioned repairs and/or replacement. This also applies to damage caused by improper handling, storage, assembly, external influences, weather, or force majeure (e.g., natural disasters).

Replaced parts remain the property of the seller and must be returned to the buyer with postage and paid packaging. At Spinea Navis’s discretion, defective parts can be replaced with new ones or repaired by Spinea Navis or its suppliers. The customer is also required to perform scheduled maintenance on the advertised device.

Spare Parts: It is essential to differentiate between spare parts installed/replaced during the warranty period and those replaced outside the warranty period. Spare parts installed/replaced during the warranty period are for repairing the goods, and the replaced parts do not carry a separate warranty period. The warranty remains attached to the product they are installed in.

  • Spare parts installed/replaced outside the warranty period are subject to a 24-month warranty

Spinea Navis and the trader explicitly exclude any liability for the impact on the product’s quality. The above-mentioned warranty does not replace liability. The product or its defects, including damages (resulting from machine failure or loss of income), expenses, or costs related to defects, are also excluded. The contract cannot be terminated, nor payments suspended (or reduced), as Spinea Navis’s obligation is limited to repairing and replacing parts under warranty.

Limitation of Liability: Spinea Navis is not responsible for any indirect or consequential damages, such as lost profits or business interruption, that may occur due to the use or inability to use our products or services.

Intellectual Property Rights: The buyer acknowledges and agrees that all intellectual property rights related to the products, including but not limited to patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and any other proprietary rights, shall remain the exclusive property of the seller. The buyer is granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the products following the terms of this agreement. The buyer shall not reproduce, reverse engineer, disassemble, modify, or create derivative works based on the products, nor allow any third parties to do so, without the express written consent of the seller. Any unauthorized use, replication, or infringement of the seller’s intellectual property rights shall be considered a material breach of this agreement and may result in legal action.

Force Majeure: Force majeure events are unforeseen circumstances beyond our control that may affect our ability to fulfill our obligations, such as natural disasters or supply chain disruptions.

Governing Law and Venue: This agreement and any disputes arising out of or in connection with the sale shall be governed by and construed following the laws of the seller’s jurisdiction, without regard to its conflict of law principles. The parties hereby agree that any legal proceedings arising out of or relating to this agreement shall be brought exclusively in the courts located within the seller’s jurisdiction, and the parties hereby irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts to litigate any such dispute. By entering into this agreement, the parties agree to waive any objections to the venue or inconvenient forum, and they further agree to be subject to the personal jurisdiction of said courts.

Dispute Resolution: Both parties should first attempt to negotiate in good faith to resolve any disagreements. If a resolution cannot be reached, the matter can be taken to the competent court in Zagreb.

Modifications: Committed to continuous product improvement, Spinea Navis reserves the right to make unannounced changes and modifications. In these instances, the buyer is not entitled to cancel the contract order.

Technical Documentation and Confidentiality: The buyer is granted a limited license to use the technical documentation provided by Spinea Navis for their own purposes. However, they must maintain the confidentiality of this information and not share it with unauthorized third parties.

Notices: All formal notices, requests, and other communications between the buyer and the seller under this agreement must be in writing and shall be deemed to have been duly given when personally delivered or sent via registered mail, return receipt requested, or via email to the designated address or email address of the respective parties. The parties may update their designated address or email address for notices by providing written notice of the change to the other party. The receipt of any such communication shall be acknowledged in writing by the receiving party. This provision ensures that all important communications between the buyer and the seller are properly received, documented, and acknowledged.

Confidentiality Clause: The parties agree that during their business relationship, they may access or become acquainted with each other’s Confidential Information, including trade secrets, financial information, customer and supplier details, business strategies, and technical documentation. Confidentiality obligations do not apply to information that is publicly available, independently developed, rightfully received from a third party, or required to be disclosed by law. These obligations will last for five (5) years after the agreement’s expiration or termination.

These General Terms and Conditions of Purchase govern all business transactions between Spinea Navis, hereinafter referred to as the “Buyer,” and enterprises, foundations, state-controlled organizations, companies, corporations, and legal entities (collectively, “Suppliers”) supplying goods and services to the Buyer. These Terms and Conditions shall have exclusive validity and precedence over any conflicting terms presented by the Supplier.

Modifications and Conflicting Terms – Individual agreements between Spinea Navis and the Supplier may modify or supersede these General Terms and Conditions of Purchase. The Buyer explicitly rejects the application of the Supplier’s terms and conditions. This rejection applies even if the Buyer does not expressly object to a reference to the Supplier’s terms and conditions, such as in an order confirmation or other communication.

Request for Quotations, Orders, and Confirmations: When the Buyer requests a quotation from the Supplier, including but not limited to a Request for Quotation or Invitation to Tender, the Buyer is not obligated by such a request. The Buyer is not responsible for any costs incurred by the Supplier in preparing or submitting a quotation unless otherwise agreed in writing. The Buyer only accepts content related to prices, payment terms, specific performance details, and delivery and performance dates from the quotation. Any reference to the Supplier’s General Terms and Conditions in the quotation is considered void.

The Buyer may submit written orders, which can also be sent via email or fax. The Supplier must promptly inform the Buyer if the order contains discrepancies or contradictions that could reasonably lead to concerns regarding the order’s execution meeting the Buyer’s or Buyer’s customer’s requirements. In such a case, the Supplier must provide the Buyer with a reasonable amount of time to reconsider and possibly modify the order.

The Supplier must confirm the orders within three working days in writing unless otherwise specified or immediately reject them if not otherwise obligated by an agreement with the Buyer to accept the placed order. If the Supplier does not confirm the order within the specified time, the Buyer reserves the right to cancel or modify the order without any consequences.

Pricing, Payment Terms, and Conditions: Unless otherwise agreed upon, prices are determined according to the accepted order. If no written agreement states otherwise, the price includes delivery free of charge to the specified address by DDP Incoterm 2010, including packaging. The return of packaging requires a separate agreement.

Payment terms are set at 60 days net following receipt of the invoice. Should the Buyer make an advance payment, it must be accompanied by a Bank Guarantee of an equal amount. The Buyer reserves the right to offset payments against any claims the Buyer may have against the Supplier.

Delivery, Risk, and Title Transfer: Unless otherwise agreed, the applicable Incoterm 2010 is DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to the destination. Deliveries may also be made to the Buyer’s customer’s site outside Germany or Europe.

The Transfer of Risk is by the provisions of the agreed Incoterm. However, if the contract requires installation at the site and/or commissioning, the risk is not transferred until the installation or commissioning, whichever is applicable based on the Supplier’s contractual obligations, has been
